Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick client, Acrux, is an innovative Australian drug delivery company, developing and commercialising a range of transdermal products for global markets. The technology was spun out of Monash University in 1999 and Acrux listed on the Australian stock exchange in 2004. Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick has assisted the company file and prosecute more than 150 patents and registered designs in all major territories globally.

In simple terms, Acrux’s technology delivers drugs through the skin using a metered dose spray applicator that delivers a precise dose to the skin surface. The spray dries very quickly and allows the drug to be delivered continuously over a long period of time, and therefore only needs to be applied once a day. The delivery mechanism offers a number of advantages to patients, including easy, discreet and convenient administration, fast drying and quickly absorbed formulation, non-irritating and non-invasive to the skin and invisible after application, thereby avoiding the need for patches, pills or injections. Last month, Acrux announced that its first product, EvaMist™, had been launched in the US. Evamist™ is the first and only estradiol transdermal spray, and is indicated for the treatment of moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause.
